UW-Madison Varsity Band Concert Submitted: 02/14/2010
ANTIGO - The snowy weather didn't stop people from going to Antigo on Valentine's Day, to express their love for the Badger State while listening to the University of Wisconsin-Madison Varsity Band.

Michelle Reif is President of the Antigo Band Boosters, an organization that brought the UW-Madison Varsity Band to Antigo for a concert in order to help the High School's band. "We thought this would be a good way to add some funds so that we can improve our band also."

The band members were having fun in Sheldon Fieldhouse...but so were the 1500 audience members. UW-Madison Band Director Mike Leckrone says he and his band feel a real connection to the people. "I don't know what it is, I don't know whether it's in the cheese that we eat, I just don't know, but it's very special."

And with "On Wisconsin" celebrating its 100th birthday, there's no better place to play it than among those who appreciate it most.

Leckrone says, "1909, 1910 was the first year it was in existence, so we're celebrating it all this year."

Reif says, "I have chills listening to them, they're great, it really makes us proud that we were able to bring them here."

To listen to a well-known band and show loyalty to the Badger State.

Leckrone says they wanted to expose everyone to different types of music during this concert.

2 of the UW-Madison Varsity Band members graduated from Antigo High School.
